The Central Water Authority (CWA) of Mauritius is enhancing its water supply network in response to the ongoing water crisis. The organization is installing ten new reservoirs, each with a capacity of 30 cubic meters, in regions served by Mare-aux-Vacoas. This move aims to improve water distribution in areas experiencing low water pressure, resulting in irregular water supply to households.
The CWA's efforts to augment its supply network come as several localities face challenges with water availability. In some areas, water does not flow regularly from taps due to insufficient pressure. To address this, the CWA is not only adding new reservoirs but also conducting interventions on the existing network. One such intervention is at Nouvelle-Découverte, where the Alma well is being utilized to contribute to the water supply.
According to CWA Director General Shiam Thannoo, the first set of new reservoirs has been installed in various localities over the past month. These reservoirs allow residents to collect water directly with their containers and buckets when it is not readily available at their taps. The installed reservoirs are located in regions such as the 16th Mille, résidences Atlee, L’Espérance, and other nearby localities to alleviate residents' difficulties.
The CWA's strategy involves creating additional water collection points for residents in the most affected areas. This approach complements the existing water distribution schedules and network interventions. By expanding the network with more reservoirs, the CWA aims to extend support to other localities facing similar challenges. The organization has made provisions for ten additional reservoirs to serve more regions.
The water crisis in Mauritius continues to test the distribution network. The CWA is addressing the situation by making adjustments to the existing network and installing supplementary reservoirs across various neighborhoods. These measures are intended to mitigate the problems encountered by residents, although their effectiveness will depend on the availability of dwindling resources.
At Nouvelle-Découverte, residents had previously reported difficulties with water supply. Director General Shiam Thannoo confirmed that measures have been taken to improve distribution in this area. The CWA has adjusted valves to better direct water flow within the network and is operating the Alma well to support the local water supply.
The ongoing water shortages in Mauritius have prompted the CWA to implement a multi-faceted approach to ensure a more reliable water supply. With the addition of new reservoirs and interventions at specific locations, the organization aims to alleviate the water-related challenges faced by residents across the island.
