A visit of work is currently underway in Mauritius, hosting delegations from Seychelles, Comoros, and Madagascar. The visitors include assembly presidents and vice-presidents, members of parliament, and parliamentary staff. Their main objective is to closely examine how Mauritius integrates and utilizes artificial intelligence in its parliamentary work. This initiative aims to enhance parliamentary efficiency through new technologies and strengthen regional cooperation.
On October 2, a presentation and demonstration session was held in Port-Louis, focusing on AI applications in legislative institutions. The session was attended by Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, the President of the National Assembly. She highlighted the transformative potential of AI in optimizing parliamentary work, consolidating institutional functions, and enhancing decision-making. Aumeeruddy-Cziffra emphasized the need for institutions to adopt emerging technologies and integrate AI across various sectors of the economy.
Aumeeruddy-Cziffra stressed the crucial importance of multilateralism, noting that no state can evolve in isolation. She called for increased cooperation among Small Island Developing States, particularly through sharing expertise and pooling resources on common issues. The President of the National Assembly advocated for an open approach, allowing nations to voice their opinions, contribute their know-how, and benefit from peer expertise.
Referencing the 1982 Port-Louis Ministerial Declaration and the 1984 Victoria Agreement, Aumeeruddy-Cziffra observed that the Indian Ocean region is currently experiencing instability. In this context, she urged stronger cooperation among Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles, and La Réunion, especially on issues related to the blue economy and maritime security.
The President of the National Assembly expressed confidence that the visit will enable participants to concretely observe Mauritius' experience in integrating AI into parliamentary processes. She believes that this immersion will allow them to explore AI's potential in supervising complex domains within government institutions.
The visiting delegations will have the opportunity to learn from Mauritius' experience and explore ways to apply AI in their own parliamentary work. This knowledge-sharing initiative is expected to foster greater regional cooperation and enhance the effectiveness of parliamentary institutions in the region.
By sharing its expertise, Mauritius aims to contribute to the development of more efficient and effective parliamentary systems in the region. The visit is a significant step towards strengthening regional cooperation and promoting the use of emerging technologies in parliamentary work.
