The Quatre-Bornes Secondary School in Mauritius has officially opened a new space dedicated to student well-being and counselling. The inauguration ceremony, which took place during the second trimester prize-giving event, was attended by Minister Arvin Boolell, school officials, parents, and students. This initiative marks a first for state colleges in Mauritius and highlights the importance of student well-being and support.
The idea for the space was conceived by three members of the Student Care and Counselling Desk (SCCD), Neilna Chinien, Tasleem Abdoollah, and Aena Budaly. They aimed to create a quiet, discreet, and warm space where students could feel safe and confident discussing their concerns. Recognizing that some students face family, personal, financial, or emotional difficulties, the team sought to provide a supportive environment.
The project was supported by the school's rector, Satyaveer Gangoo, who approved the initiative and provided guidance throughout. The deputy rector, Nellah Hardowar, Senior Educator Danalutchmee Chemen, and Parent-Teacher Association president Manoj Kumar Bissessur also contributed to the project's success. Members of the SCCD came together to raise funds for the space by organizing a charity sale of donated items.
The funds were used to refurbish and decorate the space, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Posters on the walls promote positive messages about self-esteem, self-confidence, and body image, encouraging students to develop a positive self-image. The space represents more than just a physical area; it provides a judgement-free zone where students can receive support and guidance when needed.
