Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has made a commitment to shift focus towards creating organized economic activities in the country's inland regions. During a recent meeting with local officials and residents in the city of Atar, the President emphasized the need to revitalize the urban landscape of cities and provide them with the necessary tools for development. This move aims to attract more residents and economic activities to these areas.
According to President Ghazouani, the government is working on comprehensive plans to improve the situation in inland regions. A portion of resources previously allocated will be redirected towards establishing development hubs and enhancing the urban appearance of major cities and regional capitals. This initiative follows the completion of basic service projects. The President expressed optimism about launching this development drive in the near future.
Despite challenging international circumstances that have impacted priorities and resources, President Ghazouani assured that work will continue. He cited ongoing and completed projects in the Adrar region as examples of a comprehensive development vision aimed at improving basic services and infrastructure. The President mentioned that Adrar has benefited from several projects under the emergency program for accessing basic services.
A total of 206 projects have been undertaken in Adrar, with a total cost of approximately 15 billion ouguiya. About 65% of these projects have been completed, according to the President. These initiatives are expected to address the shortage of school infrastructure and improve education conditions in the region. President Ghazouani also announced an upcoming visit by a ministerial delegation to discuss the second phase of the program.
The delegation will assess actual needs and prioritize actions. The President also revealed that repair work on damaged sections of the Atar-Akjoujt road will begin soon. Meanwhile, a technical study is underway to evaluate the condition of other road sections, ensuring their maintenance and sustainability. President Ghazouani expects to complete the connection of Atar to the national electricity grid by the end of the year.
This development is anticipated to improve the city's electricity situation. Additionally, the program for drilling deep tube wells is ongoing, with some wells reaching depths of up to 600 meters. The President announced that drilling equipment is expected to arrive in early March. Furthermore, emergency measures are being taken to reform and develop the management of agricultural oases.
These measures include the establishment of a national agency for oasis development and the restructuring of Mauritanian Dates Company. The goal is to enhance the sector's role in local development and improve agricultural and oasis production in Adrar. With these initiatives, the Mauritanian government aims to promote economic growth and development in the country's inland regions.
