Mauritania's Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Mohamedou Ahmidou Amhimid, conducted an inspection visit to the "Al-Rakaba" agricultural project in Dar al-Baraka, Brakna Region, on September 27, 2026. The project, implemented by the Mauritanian Agricultural Transformation Project (PA.TA.M), is financed by the Islamic Development Bank with a budget of seven billion ouguiya.
The "Al-Rakaba" project spans 1575 hectares of irrigated land and targets 55 rural communities, as well as a significant number of certificate holders. The project aims to create job opportunities, improve living conditions for residents, and enhance agricultural development and stability in the region. The project is being implemented by the STAIM/AZIMA group and is expected to commence operations during the upcoming summer agricultural season.
During the visit, the Minister assessed the project's progress, which has reached its final stages, and verified its compliance with the technical standards outlined in the contract. The Minister also observed the experimental pumping and operation of the farm's irrigation network, confirming the readiness of the three pumping stations, each equipped with a pump capable of pumping 12,000 cubic meters per minute.
The Minister emphasized that the "Al-Rakaba" project is a strategic initiative that will support the country's efforts to achieve food sovereignty, aligning with the government's goals to enhance food security. The project is one of several strategic initiatives being implemented under the supervision of the Prime Minister, Moktار ولد أجاي, to improve living conditions and achieve developmental objectives.
The Minister called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, institutions, partners, local actors, and organizations, to mobilize their efforts to ensure the project's success and achieve its objectives. The project, with a total cost of nearly seven billion ouguiya, financed by the state and its development partners, represents a significant investment that will positively impact the region's residents and the country's agricultural development.
The Mayor of Dar al-Baraka, Obeidi ولد محمد عبدي, praised the "Al-Rakaba" project, highlighting its potential to improve living conditions, create employment opportunities, and establish a promising development hub through the production of rice, vegetables, and other crops. He commended the interventions of the Agricultural Transformation Project, particularly those supporting women's and youth cooperatives in the municipality.
The Minister was accompanied during the visit by the Assistant Governor of Brakna Region, Mohamed Ahmed ولد مني, and the Governor of Bouki, as well as several officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, and administrative and security authorities at the Brakna Region level.
