Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has inaugurated the first phase of the emergency development program for Nouakchott, the country's capital. The program aims to improve the city's infrastructure and provide basic services to its residents. The President used the "Injaz" application to inaugurate the infrastructure from Nouakchott Sud wilaya. This event was part of the celebrations marking the 66th anniversary of Mauritania's Independence Day.
The first phase of the program, which cost 69 billion ouguiyas (MRO), was executed over 16 months and covered several essential sectors. The education sector saw the completion of 1,335 classrooms, a 100% achievement rate. In the health sector, 18 out of 28 planned health centers were completed, with five more expected to be finished within a month and the remaining five having an execution rate of over 80%.
The program also made significant progress in the water and sanitation sector, with all projects related to potable water supply and the filling of stagnant water bodies completed. However, the execution rate for rainwater evacuation projects stood at 70%. The access to electricity and public lighting achieved a 92.9% realization rate, while urban road projects were fully completed.
The youth and sports sector saw the completion of all projects except for the Olympic swimming pool, which has a 60% execution rate. Environmental and urban planning projects were also fully realized. However, projects like the construction of the Nation's Monument and the development of two water bodies, Taazour and Tarhil, were postponed to the second phase.
President Ghazouani then launched the second phase of the program, which will run for 16 months with an estimated budget of 115 billion ouguiyas (MRO). This phase aims to consolidate the achievements of the first phase and expand the scope of interventions to meet the expectations of the population and reinforce the modernization ambitions for Nouakchott.
The second phase will focus on continuing efforts in various sectors, including education, health, water supply, sanitation, electricity, and urban development. New projects will be introduced, such as the creation of boarding schools, kindergartens, and centers for people with specific needs. The development of specialized medicine and emergency care will also be prioritized.
The launch event was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the Prime Minister, El Moctar Ould Djay, the President of the National Assembly, and various ministers and diplomats. The program reflects the government's commitment to improving the living conditions of Nouakchott's residents and modernizing the city's infrastructure.
