Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has officially opened the first diaspora forum in Nouakchott, attracting nearly 700 participants from different continents. The two-day event aims to create a roadmap for partnership between the government and Mauritanian citizens living abroad. The forum, held at the M'hamed Ould Dadah Conference Palace, was attended by Prime Minister Moktard Ould Aje, government ministers, and members of parliament representing Mauritanians abroad.

During the opening session, President El Ghazouani encouraged diaspora members to invest in their home country and share their expertise. He emphasized their role in strengthening ties with Mauritania and contributing to its development. The forum features two workshops: one on diaspora rights and political participation, and another on the role of expatriates in promoting tourism, attracting investment, and stimulating trade.

The workshops address various topics, including directing remittances and savings towards productive projects, and improving consular and digital services. According to local news outlets, the President's call for investment and participation was well-received by the diaspora community. The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad.

The Mauritanian diaspora has presented 14 priority demands, including the creation of a national diaspora council, activation of electoral districts for Mauritanians abroad, and launch of a housing program. These demands were submitted by the Union of Mauritanian Diaspora Offices worldwide. The forum was initially planned for earlier but was postponed due to various reasons.

President El Ghazouani had promised to hold this forum during his recent election campaign. The event is seen as a step towards fulfilling his commitments to the diaspora community. Over 700 participants from 22 countries are attending the forum, which concludes on Saturday with the adoption of recommendations and a roadmap.

The Mauritanian government is working to address the demands of the diaspora community, which has significant potential to contribute to the country's development. By engaging with the diaspora, the government aims to harness their skills, expertise, and resources for the benefit of Mauritania.

The forum's outcome is expected to strengthen ties between the government and Mauritanian citizens abroad, promoting investment, trade, and economic growth. Key issues, such as electoral representation and housing, are also likely to be addressed.
