The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the sentence of life imprisonment imposed on Sibusiso Philani Hlongwa, 42, for the murder of his 34-year-old partner. The sentence was handed down by the Scottburgh Regional Court in South Africa. Hlongwa was convicted of murdering his partner in the Mahlongwa area of Umkomaas in December 2024.
According to evidence presented in court, Hlongwa and the deceased were living together when he murdered her on December 25, 2024. On that evening, Hlongwa asked the deceased to speak to him in an outbuilding, and she agreed. At approximately midnight, family members heard the deceased screaming inside the room and found her bleeding profusely when they went to investigate.
The family members reported that the deceased told them Hlongwa had stabbed her before fleeing the scene. Paramedics were called, but the deceased was declared dead upon their arrival. The matter was reported to the police, and Hlongwa was arrested the following day. The police investigation led to Hlongwa's trial, where he was found guilty of the crime.
During the trial, Prosecutor Akhile Gcume led the evidence of the family members who found the deceased after the attack, as well as that of the investigating officer and the doctor who examined the deceased's body. The post-mortem report also formed part of the state's case. The state submitted victim impact statements compiled by two of the deceased's family members.
The victim impact statements described how the family members' lives had changed for the worse following the deceased's death and the trauma of witnessing her final moments. The statements were facilitated by court preparation officer, Nokukhanya Mkhize. The NPA's regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, highlighted the importance of holding perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide accountable.
In addition to the life sentence, Hlongwa was declared unfit to possess a firearm. The NPA emphasized its commitment to curbing the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide, working with partners in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster to ensure perpetrators are held accountable for their crimes.
The NPA's efforts to combat gender-based violence and femicide are part of a broader strategy to address the issue in South Africa. The organization's priority is to ensure that perpetrators of these offences are brought to justice, and that victims receive the support they need.
