Major General Abubakar Saddique Muhammed Wase, General Officer Commanding 1 Division and Commander of Sector 1 Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YANMA, conducted a familiarisation visit to the newly established 83 Battalion in Malumfashi, Katsina, on October 1, 2026. During the visit, he received a briefing on the battalion's operations and responsibilities. Wase also inspected the battalion's permanent site in Lambun Kyauta, underscoring the military's efforts to strengthen its presence in the region.

As part of his visit, Major General Wase met with the District Head of Malumfashi and Galadima Katsina, Justice Saddiq Abdullahi Mahuta (rtd). The discussions centred on enhancing cooperation between the military and local communities, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing security challenges. The meeting reflects the military's commitment to engaging with traditional rulers and local leaders to foster a more robust security environment.

On October 2, 2026, Major General Wase, alongside the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, presided over a handing and taking-over ceremony at Natsinta Cantonment in Katsina. The ceremony marked the official transfer of the 17 Brigade from the 8 Division back to the 1 Division, in line with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu. This move is part of the Army's expansion from an eight-division to a 12-division structure.

The transfer ceremony involved a briefing by the Commander of 17 Brigade, Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim, who provided an overview of the brigade's history. Subsequently, both General Officers Commanding signed the handing and taking-over documents, formalising the brigade's return to the 1 Division. The event also featured a tree-planting exercise and a wreath-laying ceremony to honour soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

The ceremony concluded with the lowering of the 8 Division and old 17 Brigade flags and the hoisting of the 1 Division and new 17 Brigade flags. This symbolic act marked the end of the brigade's command under the 8 Division and its return to the 1 Division. The exercise was a significant milestone in the Army's restructuring efforts aimed at improving command operations and enhancing its response to security challenges in the North-West.

In his address to the troops, Major General Wase urged them to remain disciplined, prepared, and committed to their duties. He emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards of professionalism and vigilance in the face of evolving security threats. The troops were also reminded of their critical role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

The realignment of the 17 Brigade under the 1 Division is part of a broader strategy to bolster the military's presence and operational effectiveness in the North-West. This move is expected to enhance the Army's capability to respond to security challenges and foster a more robust security environment in the region. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the transfer as part of the Army's expansion plans.
