The Debt Collection Officer will be required to contact debtors via various communication channels, including telephone, email, and letters, to recover outstanding debts. They will also need to negotiate payment plans and settlement agreements with customers, follow up on broken payment arrangements, and maintain accurate records of collection activities and customer interactions. Additionally, the officer will investigate and resolve customer queries related to outstanding balances and review customer financial information to assess repayment ability.
To qualify for this position, applicants must possess a Full Grade 12 School Certificate with credits in English and Mathematics, as well as a Diploma or higher qualification in Business Administration, Marketing, Banking and Finance, or a related field. A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in debt collection, credit control, or a related role is also required. Knowledge of debt recovery procedures and collection techniques, proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, and experience using accounting or debt management systems are highly desirable.
The ideal candidate for this role will possess strong negotiation and persuasion skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and conflict resolution and customer service skills. They must be detail-oriented, analytical, and able to work under pressure to meet targets. Professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality are essential, as well as knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to debt collection.
The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and issuing demand notices and collection correspondence, escalating accounts for legal action or external collection agencies when necessary, and reconciling customer accounts to ensure accurate account balances. They will also generate collection reports and provide updates to management, ensuring compliance with company policies, debt collection regulations, and ethical standards.
