Horyal Investments Holding Company Ltd, a Ugandan-based company, has announced a job opening for a Laboratory Technician. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating the Client mini-laboratory and performing routine soil, aggregate, and concrete quality-control tests. The company is currently operationalizing a leading sugar factory at Atiak, Uganda, with an annual production capacity of 60,000 tonnes of granular sugar. The factory is jointly owned by the Government of Uganda.
The Laboratory Technician will be required to deliver assigned functions with clear accountability, auditable records, and timely escalation of risks. Key duties include operating and maintaining the Client mini-laboratory, implementing the approved testing schedule, and receiving, labeling, registering, storing, and preparing samples with full chainage/lot/structure traceability. The ideal candidate should have a Diploma in Civil Engineering, Materials, or Laboratory Technology.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in laboratory testing, with a focus on earthworks test reports, concrete test/cube register, calibration register, sample register, test reports, and failed-test notifications. The Laboratory Technician will be required to conduct routine moisture, field density, Proctor, grading, and Atterberg tests within available equipment capability.
In addition to conducting concrete slump tests and preparing, labeling, curing, and dispatching cube specimens, the Laboratory Technician will maintain curing conditions and cube/sample registers. The candidate will also be required to check test equipment condition and maintain calibration/certification records. The job involves working in a fast-paced environment, requiring prompt recording of test results and flagging of failures or anomalous results.
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for maintaining daily laboratory registers and summaries of tests passed, failed, pending, and repeated. The candidate will also prepare samples and chain-of-custody documentation for accredited external laboratories. Maintaining laboratory cleanliness, storage, consumables, and equipment security will be essential.
The successful candidate will support Consultant audits and independent verification sampling without altering original records. The Laboratory Technician will work under the supervision of senior laboratory personnel and will be required to work in a team environment.
