The KwaZulu-Natal transport department has announced it will apply traffic laws without fear or favour, following the arrest of actress and model Asavela Mqokiyana on October 27. Mqokiyana was arrested for speeding after being caught driving a BMW X3 SUV at 198 km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2 highway. Her arrest was made by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) team from Park Rynie along the N2 on Ellingham.
According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport and human settlements Siboniso Duma, the department will have no mercy this festive season, and those who break traffic laws will be arrested regardless of their social status. Mqokiyana appeared in court on Monday and is set to appear again at Scottburgh Magistrates Court on October 28. Duma's warning comes as part of a broader effort to enforce traffic laws and promote road safety in the province.
The RTI and operation Shanela teams executed 421 speeding charges between October 15 and 21, and 12,073 vehicles were stopped during the same period. A total of 1,719 motorists were charged with traffic violation-related offenses. The department also reported that 87 motorists were charged with driving without driver's licenses, and 141 motorists were charged with not wearing seat belts.
The KwaZulu-Natal transport department is set to execute more than 26 multidisciplinary operations between October 22 and 28. These operations, dubbed #NenzaniLaEzweni, are part of a prominent law-enforcement and road safety campaign spearheaded by the provincial department of transport. The campaign challenges reckless road users by asking a key question: what are you doing on our roads?
The #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign is focused on drunk driving, with 15 operations planned to target motorists who drive under the influence. The RTI will also continue to enforce traffic laws and promote road safety throughout the festive season. The department's efforts aim to reduce the number of traffic-related offenses and promote a culture of road safety in the province.
According to the department, Mqokiyana's arrest is just the beginning of a show of force by the traffic authorities in KwaZulu-Natal. The department vowed that more people would be arrested if they don't obey the rules of the road, regardless of their social status. This move is part of a broader effort to promote road safety and enforce traffic laws in the province.
The KwaZulu-Natal transport department's efforts to enforce traffic laws and promote road safety are ongoing. In the period leading up to the festive season, the department is working to reduce the number of traffic-related offenses and promote a culture of road safety.
