A KwaZulu-Natal man, Sibusiso Philani Hlongwa, 42, was handed a life sentence in the Scottburgh Regional Court for murdering his spouse on Christmas Day in 2024. The incident occurred in the Mahlongwa area of Umkomaas, where Hlongwa and the deceased were living together. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KZN, Hlongwa arrived home and asked the deceased to speak to him in an outbuilding, where he subsequently stabbed her to death.
The NPA reported that family members heard the deceased screaming inside the room at approximately midnight and found her bleeding profusely when they went to investigate. The deceased told them that Hlongwa had stabbed her before fleeing the scene. Paramedics were called, but she was declared dead on arrival. The matter was reported to the police, and Hlongwa was arrested the following day. The NPA presented evidence in court, including testimony from family members who found the deceased, the investigating officer, and the doctor who examined the deceased's body.
During the trial, Prosecutor Akhile Gcume led the evidence, and the post-mortem report formed part of the State's case. The State also submitted victim impact statements compiled by two of the deceased's family members, which described the trauma and impact of the deceased's death on their lives. The NPA's regional spokesperson in KZN, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said that curbing the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide remains an organisational priority for the NPA.
Ramkisson-Kara stated that the NPA, together with its partners in the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, will continue working to ensure that perpetrators of these offences are held accountable. The life sentence handed to Hlongwa sends a strong message that perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide will be brought to justice. According to Ramkisson-Kara, the NPA is committed to ensuring that victims of these crimes receive the justice they deserve.
