Ghana's Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame A-Plus, has responded to veteran broadcaster Nii Adjei Klu on Facebook, defending his previous comments that Teshie is the most dangerous place in Ghana. A-Plus clarified that his remarks were about the security situation in Teshie, not an attack on its people or the Ga community. He emphasized that his comments were factual and scientifically proven. The MP's response comes after Klu criticized A-Plus for labeling Teshie as the most dangerous town in Greater Accra.
A-Plus took a swipe at Klu, suggesting the broadcaster direct his energy towards pressuring security agencies to address crime in Teshie. He wrote that Klu should focus on putting pressure on security agencies to stop crime in Teshie before it spreads elsewhere. The MP also referenced a past incident where Klu allegedly had items stolen from him, implying that Klu should be more concerned about the crime issue. A-Plus stood firmly behind his original statement, describing it as factual rather than inflammatory.
The controversy surrounding Teshie's crime levels has been reignited following the killing of Circle phone dealer Nana Yaw Kyere, popularly known as Dinero. Klu had previously argued that Dinero's death should not be used to condemn the entire community, claiming that none of those arrested in connection with the case was an indigene of Teshie. However, A-Plus maintained that his comments were about the security situation, not the people of Teshie.
A-Plus also pushed back against any suggestion of ethnic bias in his comments, pointing out that his wife is Ga and that his feelings for the Ga people are genuine. He recalled that Teshie-Nungua Estate was once considered one of the most prestigious addresses in Ghana, with residents viewed as the cream of the crop by their peers. The MP expressed his disappointment in the community's current state.
The MP reached back into his own childhood to illustrate how dramatically Teshie has changed. He recalled that Teshie-Nungua Estate was once a desirable community, but it has since become a gangster's paradise. A-Plus called on the community to reclaim its former standing, stating "Make Teshie great again. Yes, we can!" He emphasized the need for collective action to address the security concerns in Teshie.
The back-and-forth between A-Plus and Klu is not the only controversy surrounding the MP. Earlier, A-Plus directly challenged Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin over the deadly unrest in New Winneba. The Gomoa Central MP alleged that some people behind the attacks believed they could rely on Afenyo-Markin's political protection. A-Plus also accused the Ghana Police Service of dishonesty as pressure mounted for answers over the attacks.
Police investigations into Dinero's death remain ongoing. A-Plus's comments have sparked a renewed debate about crime levels in Teshie and the need for collective action to address the issue. The incident has also raised concerns about the security situation in the area and the role of community leaders in addressing these concerns.
