According to KURA, the extension is attributed to delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment, as well as site-related challenges beyond the contractor's control. The authority and the contractor remain committed to completing the works to the required safety and quality standards within the revised timeline.
Traffic arrangements will remain in place throughout the extended closure period. Motorists and other road users are advised to continue using alternative routes with guidance from police and marshals. The authority urges road users to follow directions from traffic police officers and traffic marshals to facilitate movement around the construction area.
Eldoret Road, located in the Pumwani and Eastlands areas of Nairobi, provides a link between local streets and routes towards Jogoo Road across the Nairobi River. The road connects traffic from Eastleigh through 18th Street, Ole Sironi, and 19th Street to Uhuru Estate via Athi Road. It also provides access to Wangu Road and Heshima Avenue towards Jogoo Road.
The bridge is critical, particularly for matatus traveling from Jogoo Road to town, who routinely use the route as an alternative whenever heavy traffic builds up along Jogoo Road during morning peak hours. Construction of the bridge on Eldoret Road began on May 18, 2026, with the works initially expected to be completed by September 18.
A temporary pedestrian bridge has been erected at the construction site to allow pedestrians to move in and out of Uhuru Estate while the works continue. The revised completion timeline will allow the authority and contractor to complete the project while meeting the required safety and quality standards.
The extension means the closure will remain in effect for more than three months beyond the original completion date, with motorists expected to continue relying on alternative routes during the construction period. KURA has apologized for the inconvenience caused and is working to transform urban mobility.
