Kowie United has made history by reaching the quarter-finals of the Epru Adams Cup, defeating Steytlerville 32-24 in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter at the Station Hill Sports Ground in Port Alfred on Saturday, 3 October. This is the first time Kowie United has competed in the Adams Cup, and their remarkable run continues. A large crowd witnessed the match, which lived up to expectations with both teams producing some big tackles and scoring opportunities.
The first half was evenly matched, with Steytlerville dominating the scrums but both teams struggling to convert scoring opportunities. The respective kickers missed several kickable penalties, but both teams managed to score a try and conversion, together with a penalty, to leave the scores locked at 10-10 at halftime. The predicted rain held off just in time for kick-off, with the weather clearing before the match got underway.
Kowie United came out with renewed purpose after the break and gained valuable momentum, scoring a try, conversion, and penalty to establish a 20-10 advantage. However, Steytlerville refused to surrender, keeping the ball alive and making full use of their skilful backline. In the 11th minute, the visitors hit back with a converted try, reducing the deficit to 20-17.
Steytlerville continued to pile pressure on Kowie United, forcing them into a number of errors. Their persistence eventually paid dividends when they crossed for another converted try in the 34th minute to take the lead for the first time at 24-20. Kowie United responded by introducing their highly regarded "bomb squad", which injected fresh energy and urgency into the match.
Former provincial scrumhalf Jordan Doyle was particularly influential, bringing his experience and attacking intent to the contest.
