Political management consultant and Executive Director of Compassionate Heart Foundation of Canada, Joe Korka-Waadah, has called on critics of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, to stop dwelling on his recent comments and instead address the economic hardship and policy failures in Nigeria. Korka-Waadah described Amaechi's intervention as a courageous attempt to draw attention to the difficulties confronting millions of Nigerians under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Korka-Waadah expressed concern over the tendency of Nigerians to prefer leaders who tell them what they want to hear, rather than those prepared to speak uncomfortable truths. He emphasized that truth and honesty are essential in leadership, but often frowned upon. According to him, Amaechi's record of confronting powerful interests, including military authorities during his years as a student activist, demonstrated his willingness to speak without fear.
The consultant questioned why Amaechi should be criticised for speaking out about the hardship facing Nigerians, particularly given his history of challenging those in power. He argued that Amaechi's message was resonating with Nigerians struggling with poverty and rising economic pressures, urging the government and its supporters to engage the issues raised rather than personalise the debate.
Korka-Waadah maintained that Amaechi's message should not be distorted by the controversy over his reference to his late mother. He described Amaechi as a courageous leader who will speak the truth, with the intention that the administration will look into the issues he advanced. In developed societies, such a leader is highly priced and respected, Korka-Waadah noted.
The consultant urged the government to focus on the substance of Amaechi's remarks, which highlighted the broader economic challenges facing Nigerians. He emphasized that Nigerians are suffering due to insensitive policies of the Tinubu regime, and leaders should be brave enough to point out the ills of the current administration.
Korka-Waadah also criticized the culture of personalized attacks on leaders who speak out against government policies. He argued that honest discussions about the country's direction are essential, rather than shielding leaders from criticism. According to him, this approach will enable the government to address the nation's challenges effectively.
Korka-Waadah's comments reflect a growing concern among Nigerians about the country's economic situation and the need for honest discussions about its challenges. As the nation grapples with poverty and rising economic pressures, stakeholders are calling for courageous leadership that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.
