The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has issued a final eviction notice to traders, garage operators, businesses, and other occupants at Abrepo Junction and adjoining areas. They are required to vacate the designated project corridor by Sunday, October 4, 2026, to allow for preparatory and enabling works under Phase 1 of the Suame Interchange Project. The KMA has warned that enforcement and demolition will begin shortly after the deadline.
A designated demolition and enforcement team will commence the removal of unauthorized structures, goods, equipment, building materials, and other items left within the affected area from Thursday, October 8. The Assembly had previously engaged with affected stakeholders and issued an initial communication on August 25, 2026, asking occupants to relocate voluntarily ahead of the project works.
Phase 2 of the Suame Interchange Project is currently 87% complete and is expected to open to traffic in October. Its completion will pave the way for intensive construction under Phase 1, which includes the construction of a three-tier interchange at Suame, two overpasses at Abrepo and Krofrom Junctions, and the widening of the Eastern and Western Bypass Roads.
At Abrepo, initial works will include the relocation of affected utility infrastructure, including Ghana Water Company Limited pipelines and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) lines, alongside preparations for traffic management within the project corridor. The KMA has advised affected occupants to remove their belongings and leave the area before the October 4 deadline.
The Assembly has warned that it will not be responsible for loss or damage to items left behind after the deadline. Traders who require alternative space have been directed to the Racecourse Market, while garage operators have been advised to contact the Works Engineer at the Racecourse Market for assistance in identifying suitable relocation sites.
The Suame Interchange Project aims to improve traffic flow and transportation within the Kumasi Metropolis while expanding key sections of the city's road network. The KMA is urging all affected persons to cooperate with the project authorities to facilitate the timely commencement of the works.
The project is expected to have a significant impact on the city's infrastructure and transportation systems. The Assembly's efforts to engage with affected stakeholders and provide alternative solutions demonstrate its commitment to minimizing disruptions to businesses and residents.
