The Kenyan government is in talks with Uganda to find a permanent solution to the harassment of fishermen in Lake Victoria. Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to address the issue and put an end to the nuisance. This comes after a meeting with fisherfolk from Usigu, Rarieda, and Bondo sub-counties, attended by Nyanza Regional Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha and other officials.

The meeting, held at Uhendo Beach in West Sakwa, Bondo sub-county, aimed to address the concerns of local fishermen. Omollo assured them that the government is working to strengthen the Kenya Coast Guard Services (KCGS) to effectively patrol the lake and prevent foreign intruders. He emphasized the need for adequate funding to enhance security in the lake and eliminate insecurity cases.

President William Ruto's government has invested heavily in the blue economy in the region, including the construction of nine fish landing sites in Lake Victoria. Additionally, the government has provided new fishing gear, training, and life support to fishermen. Omollo noted that further infrastructure development is necessary to complete the ecosystem.

Legislators Elisha Odhiambo (Gem) and Gedion Ochanda (Bondo) attended the meeting, urging the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party to allow President Ruto to engage with all communities. Odhiambo cautioned that the ODM's push for a 50-50 share of government could lock out other communities, emphasizing the need for inclusivity.

The harassment of Kenyan fishermen by Ugandan authorities has been a longstanding issue. In response, the Kenyan government is seeking a diplomatic solution through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This approach aims to address the root causes of the problem and prevent future incidents.

Strengthening the KCGS is a key aspect of the government's strategy to enhance security in Lake Victoria. The PS emphasized the importance of providing sufficient funds to facilitate the KCGS's efforts to patrol the lake effectively. This move is expected to boost the confidence of local fishermen and promote a safe fishing environment.

The government's investment in the blue economy and infrastructure development demonstrates its commitment to supporting the local fishing community. By engaging with Uganda and strengthening security measures, the government aims to create a conducive environment for fishermen to operate without fear of harassment or intimidation.
