The Uwiano Panel of Experts, led by Prof. Makau Mutua, has approved KSh 83,650,000 in compensation for 259 verified victims of human rights violations in Kenya. This is under Phase VI of the ongoing reparations programme. The panel announced this in an official press release issued from Nairobi on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The compensation programme was established to provide redress to individuals who suffered harm during public demonstrations and protests.
The approved compensation covers five distinct injury and loss categories. Severe injury claimants form the largest share of the total payout, with 35 victims set to receive KSh 35,000,000 combined. This is a significant allocation, reflecting the severity of their injuries. The panel confirmed that claims are still being received and urged more victims to come forward as verification continues.
Victims classified under moderate injuries number 54 and are allocated KSh 27,000,000, while 133 claimants in the minor injuries category will share KSh 6,650,000. Seven victims classified under aggravated injury are entitled to KSh 13,500,000 in total, while 30 claimants who suffered economic loss will receive KSh 1,500,000 between them. This distribution reflects the varying degrees of harm suffered by the victims.
Prof. Makau Mutua, the panel's chairperson and principal coordinator, signed off on the release, reiterating that claims are still being accepted and that verification work remains ongoing. The panel urged any victims who had not yet filed claims to do so without delay. The panel will notify each claimant of the outcome in due course.
The body stated its commitment to conducting the process with transparency and dignity and directed members of the public to contact it through its hotline at +254 141 441 294, by email at [email protected], or in person at the Ground Floor of the Kenya International Conference Centre in Nairobi on weekdays between 8am and 5pm. This is to ensure that victims can easily access information and support.
In July 2026, the government allocated KSh 674.1 million compensation payments to 505 verified victims of human rights violations linked to protests between 2017 and 2025. This is part of a broader effort to provide redress to victims of human rights violations. The panel said payments will continue until all eligible claims are verified and settled.
The Uwiano Panel of Experts continues to process fresh submissions as they arrive, with over 400 new claims submitted since the panel urged victims to come forward. Further cases were referred by IPOA and KNCHR. The panel remains committed to providing periodic public updates on the programme's status.
