Kenya's bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships has been defended by Interior and National Administration CS Kipchumba Murkomen amid doping allegations. The competition will commence at the ward level on September 26, with the Inter-County Finals scheduled for October 19 for volleyball and October 20 for football. The Iten Marathon is set to take place on October 18.
A total of KSh 63 million is up for grabs across the various competitions, with up to KSh 60 million going directly to participants. Murkomen assured that measures have been put in place to ensure only eligible players participate and that resources are properly utilized. He warned that professional players will not be allowed to participate and that an ICT system has been established to curb cheating.
To prevent wastage of resources, officials organizing the tournament have been withdrawn from their regular public service duties and will not draw allowances from the prize money. The event was attended by Governors Jonathan Bii, Wisley Rotich, and Stephen Sang, among other dignitaries. Murkomen emphasized the government's commitment to transparency in the fight against doping.
