The Kenyan government has introduced a new digital platform aimed at connecting its diaspora community with credible investment opportunities in the country. The Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform was launched in New York on September 20, 2026, during President William Ruto's engagement with Kenyans in the United States. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Government of Kenya, the United Nations in Kenya, and Equity Group Holdings.
The platform is designed to provide a digital gateway to verifiable investment opportunities in Kenya, going beyond a simple website listing investment ideas. It aims to connect Kenyans abroad with community-impact projects, financing for micro, small, and medium enterprises, enterprise creation, philanthropy, and opportunities to transfer skills and knowledge back home. The platform is expected to make it easier for diaspora Kenyans to invest in various sectors, including real estate, land, farming, livestock, tourism, financial instruments, fintech, manufacturing, hospitality, education, healthcare, transport, energy, and the blue economy.
Kenya's diaspora remittances have become a significant source of foreign exchange for the country. According to Central Bank data, formal remittances reached $5.04 billion in 2025, while inflows for the 12 months to June 2026 stood at $4.96 billion. A separate 2025 Remittances Household Survey estimated that Kenyan households received Sh931.8 billion between June 2024 and May 2025. The United States accounted for 43.5% of those inflows, making it the biggest source of remittances.
However, sending money home is not the same as investing it. Kenya's Diaspora Investment Strategy 2025–2030 says an estimated 80% of remittances are used for consumption, with about 20% going towards savings and investment. The strategy aims to create more channels through which diaspora capital can move into productive ventures. The new platform is intended to make investment opportunities easier to find and assess, while connecting investors with government agencies, counties, private businesses, and other partners.
The government has been working to build a wider menu of investment options for diaspora Kenyans. The diaspora investment strategy identifies areas of interest, including real estate and land, farming and livestock, which attracted the strongest stated interest in a survey. The platform will also provide a centralized system that connects investors to recognized institutions, reducing the distance and challenges associated with investing in Kenya from abroad.
To support diaspora investments, the government established the Diaspora Investment Support Office (DISO) under the State Department for Diaspora Affairs in 2025. DISO provides investment information and advisory support, connects investors with counties and private-sector players, and offers investor protection, follow-up, and aftercare. The State Department has also been working on other channels, including DhowCSD, which allows Kenyans abroad to invest remotely in government securities.
The Kenyan diaspora population is estimated to be over four million people, including professionals in various fields. The government is trying to move the relationship from “send money home” to a more structured connection, where Kenyans abroad can invest, finance businesses, support local projects, transfer expertise, and build commercial links with the country. The success of the platform will depend on the quality of opportunities listed, how investments are verified, the cost of participating, and whether investors can get meaningful support after putting their money in.
