The Kenyan government has stepped up efforts to accelerate the completion of infrastructure projects across the country. Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki stated that the government had paid Sh179 billion in outstanding bills for contractors undertaking road projects. This move aims to prevent project delays due to late payments, allowing Kenyans to benefit from infrastructure investments within planned timelines.
During an inspection tour of the ongoing construction of Gakoigo Stadium and the Mbombo-Kwa Thamaki Road in Murang’a County, Kindiki emphasized the government's commitment to its development program. The program, outlined in a five-year plan, includes key sectors such as roads, markets, sports facilities, affordable housing, and hostels. The Deputy President directed the contractor to complete the Mbombo-Kwa Thamaki Road, allocated Sh1.2 billion, in less than one year.
The government has allocated significant funds for various infrastructure projects, including the construction of 32 stadiums across the country. Gakoigo Stadium, being constructed at an estimated cost of Sh800 million, will accommodate about 10,000 spectators and feature a football pitch, tartan running track, and other facilities. The existing Gakoigo grounds will also be upgraded for additional training space and grassroots sporting competitions.
Kindiki emphasized the need for local communities to benefit directly from government projects, particularly through employment opportunities for young people living in areas where projects are being implemented. He encouraged young people working on the Gakoigo Stadium project to use the skills acquired to improve their livelihoods and contribute to community development.
The Deputy President urged young people to make productive use of their time and avoid alcohol and substance abuse. He stated that the government is investing in sports infrastructure to provide opportunities for young people to nurture and monetize their talents. Kindiki directed the contractor to adhere to agreed timelines and ensure the works meet required quality standards.
Kindiki was accompanied by Maragua MP Mary Waithera, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, and other leaders during the inspection tour. The government aims to ensure that infrastructure projects not only deliver physical facilities but also create economic opportunities for local residents through employment and skills development.
