The Kenya African National Union (KANU) has officially endorsed Edwin Sifuna's 2027 presidential bid, with party spokesperson Tony Gachoka confirming that both KANU and party leader Gideon Moi are offering Sifuna unconditional support. This move marks a significant development in Kenya's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election. Gachoka made the announcement on Radio Generation's "The People's Breakfast" programme on Monday, 26 October.

As part of its support, KANU has decided to withdraw from fielding candidates in Nairobi, a strategic move aimed at consolidating support behind Sifuna's Linda Mwananchi coalition. According to Gachoka, this decision was made to avoid splitting votes against Sifuna's outfit. By withdrawing, KANU hopes to provide Sifuna with a stronger, unified political base before he enters negotiations with other opposition figures.

Gachoka emphasized that Sifuna needs tangible political capital behind him before any coalition talks can carry real weight. He argued that a strong base will enable Sifuna to negotiate effectively with other opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka. KANU's support is seen as a crucial boost to Sifuna's presidential ambitions.

Gachoka also addressed Sifuna's core support base in Luo Nyanza, cautioning against divided loyalties. He urged supporters not to back both Sifuna and the rival ODM faction led by Oburu Oginga, as this could undermine Sifuna's chances. Instead, Gachoka called on young supporters to channel their online enthusiasm into concrete political alliances that can help secure Sifuna's victory.

To win the presidency, a candidate must secure over 50 percent of the national vote, along with at least 25 percent of votes cast in at least half of Kenya's 47 counties. Gachoka stressed that winning the presidency requires more than online noise, and that a candidate must have a solid political foundation to succeed.

The announcement comes amid reported friction within opposition ranks over Sifuna's chances of securing broad enough backing for a credible presidential run in 2027. Some within Linda Mwananchi have maintained that Sifuna must remain on the ballot regardless of how coalition negotiations unfold. KANU's endorsement is seen as a significant step towards strengthening Sifuna's position.

The opposition's tensions and dynamics will likely continue to evolve as the 2027 election approaches. With KANU's support, Sifuna's bid gains momentum, but the road ahead remains complex. Key points to watch include the impact of KANU's withdrawal from Nairobi, the effectiveness of Sifuna's coalition-building efforts, and the response of other opposition leaders to KANU's endorsement of Sifuna.
