Kano state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has pledged support for the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), including the allocation of land for the construction of a permanent secretariat for the institute in the state. This commitment was made through the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, during a courtesy visit by NIPR Kano state chapter members to the Government House. The visit was part of activities to sensitize the public ahead of the World Public Relations Forum (WPRF) scheduled for Abuja in November 2026.

Dawakin Tofa disclosed that the governor had directed the NIPR state chapter to formally submit a request for land allocation for the construction of its proposed secretariat. He assured members of the institute of the administration's commitment to their welfare, safety, and professional development. The state government is prepared to partner with both the national and Kano chapters of NIPR to promote training and retraining of practitioners and ensure adherence to professional ethics.

Governor Yusuf's administration has demonstrated its commitment to the public relations profession, with plans for Kano state to participate fully in the WPRF. The governor will support the event as part of his administration's commitment to the profession. Additionally, Governor Yusuf assured journalists and public relations practitioners of their safety while carrying out their duties across the state.

The Kano State Government has invested significantly in the welfare of media and public relations practitioners. In 2025, the government spent over N200 million on various forms of support and welfare for practitioners in the state. In 2026, more than N150 million had been spent under the governor's office on welfare interventions for professionals in the media and public relations sectors.

The interventions provided by the Kano state government included mobility support, working equipment, accommodation, and medical assistance to members of the profession. The government will also sponsor a Northwest regional media security summit expected to take place at the Government House in the coming week. Media and public relations practitioners are expected to participate as facilitators and participants.

The Kano state chairman of NIPR, Aliyu Yusuf, thanked Governor Yusuf for the support and recognition accorded the institute. Professor Ya'u Sule Ya'u of the Department of Mass Communication Bayero University Kano explained that the NIPR road walk was organized to create awareness about the forthcoming WPRF. The forum will bring together public relations practitioners from Nigeria and other parts of the world.

The World Public Relations Forum will provide an opportunity for practitioners to review the definition and practice of public relations in view of emerging developments in the profession. The event will consider emerging trends and developments in the profession and explore their incorporation into a new global definition of public relations.
