Kenyan politician Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF), has called on his allies in Ukambani to unite and protect his political base from efforts by President William Ruto to expand his influence in the region. This appeal comes as Musyoka vies for the opposition's presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections. He expressed concerns over his allies' failure to counter the campaigns of Ruto's supporters in Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni counties.

Speaking at the launch of Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu's new residence in Mua Hills, Musyoka urged his allies to work together rather than campaigning individually. He cited a group of five leaders in Machakos, led by Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka, who are campaigning together, and encouraged others to emulate this approach. Musyoka emphasized the need for unity to effectively campaign in other parts of the country.

Musyoka's appeal comes amid a reported rift within the Wiper party, particularly in Machakos, where there is a contest for the senatorial ticket. Several aspirants, including former Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua, have entered the race, increasing competition for Musyoka. The situation is further complicated by divisions between Kavindu and Governor Wavinya Ndeti.

The contest for the Wiper ticket is not limited to Machakos, as Musyoka also faces competition in Kitui. Seneta Enoch Wambua, Women Representative Irene Kasalu, and Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu are among those vying for the party's ticket for the gubernatorial race. Former Governor Charity Ngilu's entry into the race has added to the competition, although she is not expected to use the Wiper party.

Musyoka has promised that the Wiper party's nominations will be free and fair, urging his allies to resolve their differences and strengthen the party. He cited the example of Makueni, where he said most leaders remain loyal to him, except for one MP who supports President Ruto.

The situation in Ukambani is significant, as Machakos has been particularly affected by Ruto's efforts to build influence in the region. According to Kilome MP Thaddeus Nzambia, five out of eight MPs in Machakos support Ruto, while only two back Musyoka. Nzambia noted that Makueni is the only county where Musyoka still enjoys significant support.

Musyoka's call for unity among his allies is seen as a crucial step in maintaining his influence in Ukambani and securing the opposition's presidential ticket. The 2027 general elections are expected to be highly competitive, and Musyoka's ability to rally his supporters will be critical in determining his chances of success.
