Residents of Nuhu Yahaya Street in Angwan Sunday, Chikun local government area of Kaduna State, are calling on the Kaduna State government and their elected representatives to urgently repair a dilapidating bridge. The bridge, which links the community with neighbouring areas, has been in a state of disrepair, causing difficulties for motorists, pedestrians, and schoolchildren who use the route daily. The residents claim that the condition of the bridge is affecting movement and creating challenges for the community.
The chairman of the community committee, Sebastian Michael, has appealed to Governor Uba Sani and other relevant authorities to intervene before the bridge collapses completely. According to Michael, the bridge is an important link connecting Television, Banawa, and High Cross Junction, and its repair would ease movement and improve access to communities in the area. He noted that residents have made several efforts over the years to address the deteriorating infrastructure through community interventions, but lack the financial capacity to undertake the major work required.
Michael, who has lived in the area since 1974, described the bridge as being at the verge of collapse and urged the authorities to treat the matter as urgent to prevent a possible collapse and its attendant consequences. He appealed to the government to come to the aid of the community, saying it is very necessary at this point. The community committee chairman's appeal is backed by other residents, who have expressed concern about the impact of the dilapidating bridge on their daily lives.
A traditional title holder in the community, Mr Iliya Aliko, said residents have repeatedly drawn the attention of local government authorities to the condition of the road and bridge. According to him, government officials have visited the area to assess the situation, but residents have yet to see concrete intervention to address the problem. Aliko's statement suggests that the community has been seeking government intervention for some time, but the issue remains unresolved.
A resident, Mrs Martha James Bakam, who has lived in the community for about 30 years, also called for urgent government action, particularly because of the difficulties faced by schoolchildren using the route. Bakam said she has witnessed children struggling to cross the affected area, adding that the condition of the road and bridge has also affected residents' access to markets and other essential services. Her concerns highlight the impact of the dilapidating bridge on vulnerable members of the community.
Bakam said residents have previously raised the issue with the relevant authorities and submitted a written appeal seeking government intervention. The residents' efforts to seek government intervention have been ongoing, but the issue remains unresolved. The community is now urging the Kaduna State government and other stakeholders to take urgent action to repair the bridge.
The residents' appeal for urgent repair of the bridge is based on the importance of the route to the daily movement of people within Angwan Sunday and neighbouring communities. The bridge's repair is crucial to easing movement, improving access to communities in the area, and preventing a possible collapse and its attendant consequences. The community is hopeful that the government will intervene to address the issue and improve the living conditions of residents.
