The first edition of SLAMIZIK, a project of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Mauritius, in collaboration with Culture Events & Production, came to a close on September 25 at the Café du Vieux Conseil in Port-Louis. The competition, which combined slam and classical music, featured talents from Mauritius and Rodrigues. The event was supported by the Conservatoire de Musique and the Commission des Arts et de la Culture de Rodrigues.
After several weeks of competition, including a preselection phase and a semi-final on August 29, ten finalists took to the stage to defend their texts before the public and the jury. The competition's unique format allowed participants to develop their texts and explore the intersection of slam and classical music. The Conservatoire de Musique played a crucial role in the musical aspect of the project.
Julio Pierre Louis, from Rodrigues, emerged as the winner of the first edition of SLAMIZIK with his slam titled "Zoli Ti Pei Saz". His performance impressed both the public and the jury with its thought-provoking themes on societal issues and current events. Pierre Louis received a prize of Rs 25,000 for his win.
The jury, comprising Shenaz Patel, Zainab Soyfoo, and Lion Klash, also awarded a special prize of Rs 5,000 to Kelly Ang-Ting Hone for her outstanding text. The other winners included Ivans Lafleur (Lafleur Malade) from Mauritius, who took second place with a prize of Rs 15,000, and Matthieu Loic Charles, also from Mauritius, who secured third place with a prize of Rs 10,000.
