Thousands of farmers under the Bakolori Irrigation Scheme in Zamfara state have erupted in jubilation following a major intervention to restore the popular Bakolori Dam to full functionality. This development is expected to boost food security in Zamfara and neighbouring states. The dam, one of Nigeria's largest and most strategic irrigation projects, had been crippled by faulty irrigation gates, severe siltation, and blocked secondary drains.
The intervention was facilitated by Senator Abdul'aziz Yari Abubakar, representing Zamfara West Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation. He received a request letter dated October 4, 2026, from the Apex Water Users Association of the scheme, detailing the challenges facing the farmers. In response, Senator Yari directed K.K. Technologies Limited to commence rehabilitation work immediately.
The scope of work includes the immediate repair of a faulty water gate supplying water to the irrigation area, servicing another functioning gate to prevent its total collapse, and desilting 20 to 30 secondary drains within the scheme to restore water flow. Additionally, the assessment of Anka, Bukkuyum, and NATO dams for possible repairs is part of the project. This comprehensive approach aims to address the root causes of the dam's problems.
Alhaji Umar Adamu, Project Manager of the Bakolori Irrigation Scheme, expressed gratitude to Senator Yari for the intervention, describing its impact as immense. He mentioned that he would mobilise all Bakolori irrigation farmers to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general election. The farmers' support is seen as a significant boost to the party's campaign in the region.
Alhaji Yakubu Abubakar Marafa, Chairman of the Bakolori Water Users Association, noted that the intervention had become a rescue initiative for over 80,000 registered and unregistered members of the association. He praised Senator Yari for his responsiveness to the people's needs and assured him of the association's support in delivering his mandate as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
Senator Yari has also promised to follow up with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation on a permanent solution to the dam's siltation problem, a perennial challenge. This commitment ensures that the dam's problems are addressed comprehensively, preventing future occurrences. The senator's efforts have been praised by the farmers and association members.
The revival of the Bakolori Dam is expected to have a positive impact on food security in Zamfara and neighbouring states. With the dam functioning optimally, farmers can engage in dry-season farming, increasing crop yields and improving livelihoods. The intervention has brought relief to thousands of farmers and their families, who depend on the dam for their livelihood.
