More than 20 journalists from Kindu, in the Maniema province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have participated in a two-day training workshop on safety measures and best practices for reporting in hostile environments. The workshop, organized by Journalists in Danger (JED), was held at the Espace Shadary hotel in Kindu and concluded on September 25, 2026. The training aimed to equip journalists with the skills to identify risks and adopt appropriate measures when working in challenging environments.
During the workshop, participants were sensitized on safety best practices and risk assessment before and during missions in areas considered hostile. The training covered essential topics, including how to evaluate risks, adopt secure behaviors, and respond to emergency situations. Journalists were also encouraged to share their experiences and challenges when working in high-risk environments.
The training was facilitated by Pascal Muhindo, who emphasized the importance of conducting thorough risk assessments before embarking on any mission in a hostile environment. He stressed that journalists must always analyze the risks and carefully evaluate the location they are heading to, adding that a journalist who is killed or injured cannot inform anyone.
Participants welcomed the training, saying it was useful and relevant to their work. Astrid Tchenegwa, a journalist with Radio Mushauri, stated that the training had helped her understand how to protect herself in the field, particularly in high-risk areas. She expressed her wish for JED to organize more sessions like this for journalists in Kindu.
Joël Kitengue, a journalist with Radio Mapon, also praised the training, saying it responded to a real need. He noted that many journalists had experienced dangerous situations without knowing how to react, but now they had acquired tools that could literally save their lives. Kitengue requested that JED continue to provide such training.
The two-day training is part of JED's efforts to enhance the capacities of journalists to work safely in challenging security contexts. The organization aims to empower journalists with the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out their duties effectively, while minimizing risks to their safety.
