In commemoration of the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, Professor Yvonne Ebere Ihegihu, a renowned professor of Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has urged the daughters of Akaboezem community of Uruagu Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government of Anambra State, to strive for excellence and become leaders in their chosen fields. The event was sponsored by Daughters of Africa Development Initiative (DOADI) and took place on Saturday, 26th September, 2026.
Professor Ihegihu emphasized that girls can pursue any profession they desire, regardless of their social status, physique, family background, or educational qualifications. She cited examples of women who have excelled in various fields, including Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala of World Trade Organization, Dame Virgy Etiaba, the first and only female governor in Nigeria, Justice Mary Odili, a retired justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Amina Mohammed, the immediate past Deputy Secretary General of United Nations, and Zuril Adewale.
The guest speaker encouraged girls to exhibit courage and build their confidence on truth at all costs. She also emphasized the importance of being positive-minded and socially conscious, despite the distractions on social media. Professor Ihegihu advocated for dignity among African girl children, advising them to build their dignity, know their worth, and make themselves women of dignity and honor.
The event, convened and hosted by Lolo Chiamaka Chukwuka (Ph.D), Queen Consort of Akaboezem, Uruagu Nnewi, featured several highlights, including the awarding of scholarships to consistent and dedicated members of DOADI. Miss Favour Okechukwu was crowned Brand Ambassador of DAODI, and Mrs Chinwe Udogu, the C.E.O of Chimdiukwu Clinic and Maternity, Akaboezem, awarded annual scholarships to two pupils who took 1st and 2nd positions in the last term school report.
Other highlights of the event included the inauguration of Akaboezem Uruagu Girls Guild (AUGG), a quiz competition, debate, cultural dance, and presentation of gifts. The event aimed to empower girls and encourage them to pursue their dreams, in line with the global theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead.”
Professor Ihegihu's message to the girls was clear: they should strive for excellence, be confident, and make a positive impact in their communities. She encouraged them to emulate women who have distinguished themselves globally by dedicating their lives to positivity and becoming global icons.
