Nigeria's Ambassador to Spain, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has called on indigenes of Abia State residing in Valencia to uphold the values of unity, mutual support, and diligence. He made the call while addressing members of Ndi Abia in Diaspora and other Nigerians at an event marking the 16th anniversary of the association in Valencia, Spain. The Ambassador emphasized that their conduct and achievements in Spain influence how Nigerians and Abians are perceived.

Dr. Ikpeazu reminded the gathering that Abians are highly enterprising people, particularly renowned for their skills in tailoring and shoemaking. He encouraged them to take pride in their Igbo identity and rich cultural heritage. The Ambassador also noted that Nigerians in the diaspora remain valuable assets to the country through cultural exchange, investment promotion, and their contributions to strengthening relations between Nigeria and their host countries.

The Ambassador, who assumed office in September 2026, following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to King Felipe VI, commended the Valencia chapter for sustaining the association over the past 16 years. He assured Nigerians in Spain of the Embassy's continued support, particularly in addressing issues affecting their welfare and strengthening people-to-people relations between Nigeria and Spain.

Earlier, Chairman of Ndi Abia in Diaspora Valencia, Mr. Endy Okoroafor, expressed appreciation to the association's founding members, former leaders, and elders for their contributions to its growth and sustainability. Mr. Okoroafor disclosed that the association, formerly known as Abia State Congress in Diaspora, had overcome previous registration challenges and was now fully registered.

The anniversary celebration featured cultural performances, reflections on the association's journey, the unveiling of its almanac, presentation of awards, and networking among Abia indigenes in Valencia. The event provided an opportunity for members to reconnect with their cultural roots and strengthen bonds within the community.

Dr. Ikpeazu's call to Abians in Spain to promote unity and be worthy ambassadors of Nigeria resonates with the Igbo principle of Onye Aghala Nwanne Ya, meaning let no one leave their brother behind. This principle was emphasized by Mr. Okoroafor, who called for greater unity and participation among members.

The association's achievements and Dr. Ikpeazu's address underscore the importance of diaspora communities in promoting national unity and fostering relationships between Nigeria and host countries. The Embassy's continued support for Nigerians in Spain is expected to further strengthen these ties and encourage more Abians to be proud ambassadors of Nigeria.
