Born on December 3, 1949, in Daloa, Côte d'Ivoire, Dr. Ibrahima Diawara pursued his education at the Lycée moderne et classique de Bingerville. He obtained his high school diploma in 1971 and received a government scholarship to study pharmacy in France, specifically in Caen and Montpellier. Graduating in 1976, Diawara returned to Côte d'Ivoire to begin his career in public service. His early life and education laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the pharmaceutical sector.
Diawara's professional journey started at the Abengourou hospital, where he served as the chief pharmacist from 1977 to 1979. This experience provided him with firsthand knowledge of patient needs, hospital pharmacist responsibilities, and the challenges of supplying healthcare products. In 1979, he moved to Odienné to lead the Pharmacie des Frontières, improving access to medicine in the Denguélé and Folon regions. His dedication to public service and pharmacy practice earned him recognition within the profession.
In 1988, Diawara settled in Abidjan and took over the Pharmacie du Lycée Technique in Cocody, establishing a reputable pharmacy practice. His approach emphasized availability, rigor, consultation, and responsibility. This model became a benchmark for pharmacies in Côte d'Ivoire. Diawara's commitment to his patients and the pharmacy profession drove him to participate in professional initiatives, mutual aid, and cooperative efforts.
Diawara's involvement in cooperative efforts led to his participation in the Coopérative des pharmaciens de Côte d'Ivoire (COPHARM) and COPHARM Mutuelle. These organizations provided solidarity and financial assistance to pharmacists, promoting collective action and investment in the pharmaceutical sector. COPHARM Invest, an instrument for developing economic activities, was also established to support pharmacists and invest in local pharmaceutical production.
In 2000, Diawara became the president of COPHARMED, a major pharmaceutical distribution company in Côte d'Ivoire. This role allowed him to bridge the gap between pharmacies and distribution, ensuring a reliable supply of quality medicines. He also contributed to the Chambre syndicale de la répartition pharmaceutique and participated in the 2019 signing of conventions for the supply and distribution of health products.
Diawara's leadership extended to CIPHARM, a pharmaceutical production company, where he served as administrator and later director. Under his guidance, CIPHARM modernized its infrastructure, invested in new equipment, and expanded its product line to include injectable products. The company aimed to produce essential medicines at affordable prices, improving access and quality.
CIPHARM's growth and ambitions went beyond Côte d'Ivoire's borders, with products exported to sixteen countries. Diawara's vision for regional and African growth led to partnerships with regional distributors and engagement with international organizations, such as the ONUSIDA. His efforts promoted local production, quality, and access to essential medicines.
