The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has made a donation of assorted food items, sanitary supplies, and a signpost to the King George VI Memorial Home in Freetown. This gesture is part of the Commission's efforts to support the welfare and dignity of older persons in the country. The donation was made on Saturday, 31st October 2026, in commemoration of this year's ElderFest, under the theme "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives."
The HRCSL Chairperson, Mrs Patricia Narsu Ndanema, emphasized that the Commission's continued support for the Home reflects its commitment to ensuring older persons enjoy their fundamental human rights without discrimination. She noted that the rights of all persons in Sierra Leone are guaranteed under Chapter Three of the 1991 Constitution. Mrs Ndanema also stressed the need for effective and accessible healthcare services and stronger institutional support systems to ensure that older persons enjoy a dignified standard of living.
The Director of Gender and Children's Affairs at HRCSL, Mrs Ann-Marie Balboa, explained that the donated food and sanitary supplies are intended to address the daily nutritional and hygiene needs of residents at the Home. The signpost, she added, will improve the visibility of the Home and make it easier for visitors, service providers, and members of the public to locate the facility.
The Focal Person of the King George VI Memorial Home, Rev. Halimatu Shyllon, expressed appreciation to HRCSL for its continued support and commitment to ensuring that older persons enjoy the rights and dignity they deserve. This latest donation builds on the Commission's earlier intervention on 6th October 2026, when it provided sanitary items to the Home in commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons.
The donation is in line with HRCSL's mandate to promote and protect human rights in Sierra Leone. The Commission's Directorate of Gender and Children's Affairs plays a crucial role in promoting the rights of vulnerable groups, including older persons. The event was attended by officials from HRCSL and the King George VI Memorial Home.
The King George VI Memorial Home provides care and support to older persons in Sierra Leone. The Home's residents benefit from various services, including food, shelter, and healthcare. The donation from HRCSL will go a long way in enhancing the well-being of the residents.
