A devastating flood has hit the Hohoe Zongo community in the Volta Region of Ghana, causing widespread destruction to properties and livelihoods. The downpour, which started on Sunday and continued into Monday, resulted in the flooding of several homes and businesses. According to Assembly member for the Tsevi/Adabrakra Electoral Area, Mr Abdul Wahab Mohammed Seeriboi, over 150 houses have been affected in his electoral area. The floodwaters caused significant damage to properties, collapsing buildings and destroying livelihoods. Madam Sadia Seidu, a landlady and victim of the flood, recounted the ordeal. She said that at around 0800 hours, water started seeping into the compound of a house in front of hers, forcing occupants to quickly pack their belongings. Despite their efforts, the floodwaters rose rapidly, preventing them from salvaging most of their possessions.
Another victim, Alhaji Yussif Ali, described the sudden onset of the flood. He said that they woke up in the night to find water flowing into their homes. Before they could react, the flood had engulfed the entire vicinity. The rapid rise of the floodwaters caught many residents off guard, leaving them with little time to respond.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has responded to the disaster, with Mr Raphael Kumagah, Hohoe Municipal Director, confirming that the organisation received information about the River Dayi flooding. NADMO personnel, along with those from the Ghana Ambulance Service and Fire Service, assessed the situation. Mr Kumagah advised victims to relocate and not return until they were given the all-clear.
The Ghana News Agency observed that the floodwaters were receding, with victims beginning to salvage what they could from the wreckage. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, with NADMO taking records of affected individuals. The community is coming together to support those affected, with calls for assistance from government and benevolent organisations.
