Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, the Accord Party's presidential candidate, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Omo Ibile Igbomina House in Ganmo, Kwara State. During the visit, he was received by the National President of Omo Ibile Igbomina, Sir Bisi Fakayode. The meeting provided an opportunity for both personalities to reflect on their longstanding relationship and the development of the Igbomina institution.
Fakayode and Hashim discussed the region's tradition of cultural accommodation and peaceful coexistence, which Hashim believes offers valuable lessons for Nigeria's nation-building project. Hashim commended Fakayode for the transformation taking place at Igbomina House, showcasing renovation and rehabilitation projects undertaken under his leadership. Fakayode expressed gratitude for Hashim's longstanding support, recalling that he was among the first prominent supporters of the present Omo Ibile Igbomina leadership.
Hashim's connection to Igbomina is deeply personal, as he was raised within an Igbomina family in New Bussa, Niger State. His upbringing shaped his understanding of community, identity, and belonging. He noted that Igbomina communities have historically coexisted with settlements and communities of people from different ethnic backgrounds, including Fulani, Hausa, and Igala communities.
Hashim emphasized that cultural diversity does not have to produce social fragmentation. He described the social environment in which he was raised as an example of the "workability, resilience and strength of cultural pluralism." Hashim argued that people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds can live, trade, and participate in shared social and political spaces without abandoning their identities.
The Accord presidential candidate said that Nigeria's diversity can become a source of strength when supported by mutual respect, appropriate institutions, and a shared sense of belonging. He stated that his visit to Omo Ibile Igbomina House was more than a social engagement, describing it as "a reminiscence of where I came from, a celebration of what I have experienced, and an inspiration for what Nigeria can still become."
Fakayode took Hashim on an inspection of the Igbomina House and adjoining hospitality facility, showcasing ongoing development works. He also expressed appreciation for Hashim's encouragement and support, recalling their three-decade relationship. Hashim acknowledged Fakayode's journey from public service to his present position as national president of Omo Ibile Igbomina.
Hashim concluded that Nigeria's diversity need not be a weakness, arguing that "properly organised, mutually respected and institutionally protected," it can become one of the country's greatest sources of strength. He said, "We don't have to become identical to become one nation. We can be different and yet belong together."
