Hohoe, Ghana - Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has assured flood victims in the area that they will receive support to mitigate damages to their properties and livelihoods. The MP made this statement after touring the affected areas, where he interacted with victims and assessed the extent of the damage. According to Mr. Tsekpo, the visit aims to go beyond distributing items to ensure victims are reintegrated into their communities.
The floods, which affected over 400 houses and 4,282 households, have left many residents without valuables and livelihoods. The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, Prosper Kumi, has announced plans for a fumigation exercise in the affected areas, as well as a health screening for affected households. These measures aim to prevent the outbreak of diseases and promote a safe environment for the victims.
Assembly member for the Gbi Bla Electoral Area, Rafiu Adam, revealed that although there were no casualties, many victims lost their valuables. He stated that temporary relief items were supplied by the MP, MCE, and NADMO to make the victims safe, with classrooms and mosques designated as safe havens. The victims have been calling for support to help them get back on their feet.
Victims of the flood have shared their experiences, with some calling for authorities to expand drainage works in the community to prevent future occurrences. Madam Salisu Aisha, a victim, said the incident took them by surprise, and they were left with nothing but the bowls they used for washing. She appealed for any support that would cushion them.
Mr. Abdulai Gafaru, another victim, also called for support to help them recover from the disaster. The Hohoe Municipal Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Raphael Kumagah, reported that over 30 houses have collapsed across the Municipality, with many more affected.
The MP's assurance of support has brought some relief to the victims, who are eager to rebuild their lives. The government and other stakeholders are working together to provide aid and support to those affected. According to Mr. Tsekpo, the Works and Housing Ministry is being consulted to assess the banks of the River Dayi and find ways to mitigate future occurrences.
