Harvestfield Healthcare FZE has started commercial production of Synera DuoForte, a next-generation insecticide-treated net, in Nigeria. This marks a significant milestone in the country's ability to manufacture a critical malaria prevention tool locally. The production facility, located in the Harvestfield Free Trade Zone, Ogun State, began operations on 13 September 2026.
The facility is already supplying a World Bank-funded programme that covers 31 states. Notably, it is the first wholly Nigerian-owned facility of its kind in the country. Harvestfield manufactures the nets under an agreement with GDM Health Products, producing Synera DuoForte, a dual active ingredient long-lasting insecticidal net.
Unlike conventional insecticide-treated nets that primarily rely on pyrethroids, Synera DuoForte combines a pyrethroid with a second insecticide that works through a different mode of action. This distinction is crucial as mosquito populations in much of Nigeria have developed resistance to pyrethroid insecticides.
The World Health Organisation recommends dual active ingredient nets for areas with established pyrethroid resistance. Synera DuoForte is a WHO-prequalified product, developed and owned by GDM Health Products. The Harvestfield manufacturing site in Ogun State is also approved under that prequalification and is certified by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and ISO.
These standards provide a foundation for manufacturing nets for national malaria programmes and other health interventions requiring internationally recognised quality systems. The facility's certification ensures that the produced nets meet rigorous quality and safety standards.
GDM Health Products' representative, Jon Bastow, expressed pleasure in partnering with Harvestfield to bring Synera DuoForte to Nigeria, the country with the biggest global malaria burden. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, highlighted the importance of building Nigeria's capacity to manufacture its own health products.
Harvestfield's move into manufacturing builds on over two decades of experience in Nigeria's vector control sector. The company has operated in Nigerian vector control for 26 years, delivering more than 42 million insecticide-treated nets across all 36 states.
