Kenya is set to open its new national stadium with a high-profile European football match between Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam on January 5, 2027. The stadium, located at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi, has a seating capacity of 60,000 and is part of Kenya's preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Tanzania and Uganda. Both clubs have confirmed their participation in the event.

The match brings together two of European football's most recognizable clubs, with Bayern Munich having won the European Cup or UEFA Champions League six times and Ajax Amsterdam lifting the trophy four times. Their combined record of 10 titles gives the occasion considerable pedigree. Although the January fixture is expected to be a friendly, it will provide Kenyan supporters with an opportunity to watch two established European sides in person.

Bayern Munich board member for marketing and sales Rouven Kasper stated that the club sees the event as a chance to build closer ties with African supporters and raise the profile of German football. The club has traditionally organized international tours in regions including North America and Asia, and the Nairobi match offers another opportunity to expand its reach.

The choice of Ajax Amsterdam also gives the occasion a strong football identity, with the Dutch club known internationally for its youth development system and history of producing players who have gone on to play for major teams across Europe. Ajax said the match would also form part of its preparations for the second half of the season.

The Raila Odinga International Stadium is central to the event, having been developed to provide Kenya with a modern facility capable of hosting major international football events. The stadium is planned to serve as one of the venues for AFCON 2027, which will be the first edition of the tournament hosted jointly by three countries.

President William Ruto has presented the Bayern-Ajax fixture as a statement of Kenya's ambition to host major international sporting events. The government has said the opening will be supported through corporate partnerships and a commercial model intended to help the facility generate revenue and attract investment.
