Director General of National Security and Territorial Surveillance Abdellatif Hammouchi visited a police officer injured in a deliberate hit-and-run incident in Agadir. The officer was seriously injured after a driver ran him over twice on October 29, in an incident captured in a video that circulated widely on social media. Hammouchi checked on the officer's health and response to medical treatment at the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir.
The police officer suffered serious injuries and fractures, prompting Hammouchi to offer him support and commend his professionalism and sacrifice while carrying out his duties. Before the visit, Hammouchi had granted the injured officer an exceptional promotion and instructed the General Directorate of National Security's (DGSN) health and social services to cover all medical and hospital expenses related to his condition.
Hammouchi also dispatched a joint security delegation to visit the officer and assess his condition. The delegation included the director of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Social Works of National Security Personnel, the security health inspector, and the head of Agadir's security services. The delegation provided the officer with the necessary support.
The incident occurred when a driver allegedly refused to stop at a police checkpoint at the northern entrance to Agadir. A motorcycle police patrol later attempted to intercept the vehicle on Mohammed V Avenue, where the driver struck the officer before reversing and running over him again, then fled the scene. Video footage of the incident circulated widely on social media.
Police arrested the driver and two passengers shortly after the incident. An investigating judge at the Agadir Court of Appeal ordered the detention of all three suspects. The driver is being investigated on suspicion of attempted premeditated murder, driving under the influence of alcohol, fleeing an accident scene, and refusing to obey police orders.
The DGSN stated that Hammouchi's visit reflects its continued commitment to supporting police officers who sustain physical injuries while performing their duties. The DGSN aims to ensure that officers receive the necessary medical care and assistance. Hammouchi emphasized that the DGSN is committed to protecting its officers against attacks they face while maintaining public security and protecting people and property.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of police officers in Morocco. The DGSN has taken steps to address the issue, including providing support to injured officers and their families. The incident is under investigation, and the suspects are being held in detention pending further proceedings.
