Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) President, Engr. Habu Gumel, led the country's latest engagement with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) in Japan. The meeting took place at the Extraordinary Session of the ANOCA General Assembly in Nagoya. Gumel, also the Treasurer-General of ANOCA, presented Nigeria's progress in hosting the 2nd African School Games, Abuja 2027. The presentation aimed to update African National Olympic Committees and stakeholders on preparations.
During the presentation, Gumel introduced Lekan Abari, Chairman of the Abuja 2027 Local Organising Committee (LOC). Abari outlined preparations, including the hosting agreement, ANOCA's initial inspection of facilities, venue rehabilitation, and completion plans. The presentation also covered approved sports and dates, funding, resource mobilisation, and the operational readiness of the LOC. These updates demonstrated Nigeria's commitment to hosting a successful event.
The presentation addressed key concerns surrounding the Games, including participant safety and security, the functionality of the LOC Secretariat, and technical manuals. The Nigerian delegation assured ANOCA that preparations were progressing across various operational areas. They also committed to maintaining close engagement with ANOCA to meet all agreed requirements and timelines. This commitment aims to ensure the Games align with the expectations of the African Olympic Movement.

Other African countries also made presentations at the ANOCA General Assembly. Ethiopia presented on hosting the 2027 African Youth Games, Equatorial Guinea on hosting the 2027 Beach Games, and Egypt on hosting the 2026 All-African Games. The National Olympic Committees of Africa were invited to the 20th Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026, as part of a growing Africa-Asia Olympic and sports-development partnership.
The renewed institutional backing from ANOCA and progress in preparations position Abuja 2027 for success. The event is expected to contribute to the development of sports on the continent. Nigeria's successful hosting of the Games could also enhance its reputation as a major sports hub in Africa.
