The Grand Egyptian Museum, located near the Pyramids of Giza, has received four million visitors since its official opening in November 2025. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced this figure, which covers the period up to the end of August. The announcement was made during a meeting of the GEM Authority's board at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo.
The meeting was chaired by Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy, and the GEM Authority's CEO Ahmed Ghoneim reviewed key activities and events held at the museum. These included visits by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his spouse Entissar El-Sisi, as well as Chinese President Xi Jinping and his spouse Peng Liyuan. The Chinese leaders visited the museum in early September as part of their official visit to Cairo.
The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities reported that visitor numbers had begun to rise with the start of the new tourist season. Foreigners make up a significant portion of visitors, with 60% of the 3 million visitors in the first seven months being from abroad. The GEM is the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization: ancient Egypt.
The museum displays thousands of priceless artifacts, including the entire collection of more than 5,000 pieces from the tomb of Tutankhamun. These artifacts are shown together for the first time in a single hall. The GEM Authority's board also approved the acceptance of a donation from France as part of the Egyptian-French cooperation project in the field of antiquities.
The donation includes humidity-measuring devices for the museum's exhibition halls, which will help support the preventive conservation system. The devices will record and monitor the stability of environmental conditions surrounding the archaeological artifacts. The board members were also briefed on memoranda of understanding being prepared for signing with international universities and archaeological museums.
These agreements aim to strengthen cooperation between the GEM authority and international institutions. The GEM Authority's CEO Ahmed Ghoneim emphasized the importance of these partnerships in preserving and showcasing Egypt's rich cultural heritage. The museum's opening has been met with praise from ALECSO executive council members and other international leaders.
