The Gambia Press Union (GPU) has called on political parties, candidates, and citizens to uphold peace, tolerance, and democratic values as the country prepares for the December 5, 2026 presidential election. GPU President Isatou Keita described the nomination process as a defining moment in The Gambia's democratic journey, emphasizing its significance in the country's leadership and accountability. The nomination process is more than a procedural requirement, marking a significant milestone in the electoral process.

The GPU urged political actors to conduct campaigns based on issues and ideas rather than hostility and division. The Union emphasized that elections should be a contest of ideas, not hostility, and that voters deserve clear policy proposals and practical solutions to the country's challenges. The GPU also cautioned against personal attacks, hate speech, misinformation, disinformation, and inflammatory rhetoric, warning that such actions undermine public confidence and weaken democratic discourse.

The media will play a crucial role during the election period, and the GPU called on journalists and media organizations to uphold the highest professional and ethical standards. Journalists were advised to prioritize accuracy over speed and verification over speculation. The Union reminded journalists to prioritize their safety and security while covering political activities and election-related events, and to remain aware of their surroundings.

The GPU highlighted the importance of journalists being properly identified, maintaining communication with editors and colleagues, and avoiding situations that may unnecessarily expose them to harm. Media houses were urged to ensure that reporters assigned to election coverage are adequately prepared and provided with the logistical support needed to perform their duties effectively. Journalists were also encouraged to strengthen their digital security practices.

The GPU warned of coordinated disinformation campaigns that often intensify during election periods and stressed the importance of verifying user-generated content, protecting sources, and safeguarding personal data. The Union called on all stakeholders to reject hate speech, intimidation, harassment, and attacks against journalists, reaffirming that freedom of expression remains a cornerstone of democracy.

The GPU urged security services to carry out their duties with professionalism, impartiality, and respect for fundamental freedoms, emphasizing that journalists must be allowed to work freely and safely without interference, obstruction, or intimidation. The Union announced that it has designated a Safety Officer who will remain on standby throughout the electoral period to receive reports and respond to incidents.

The GPU reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and supporting a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process. The Union called on Gambians to ensure that the 2026 election season is remembered for the maturity, tolerance, and democratic spirit of the Gambian people, rather than tension and division.
