The Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia, Mr. Henry F. Saamoi, and his delegation paid a working visit to the Bank of Ghana on Thursday, October 1. The courtesy visit aimed at deepening cooperation between the two central banks. It followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier this year between the Bank of Ghana and the Central Bank of Liberia to promote capacity building, technical cooperation, and knowledge sharing.
The meeting was chaired by the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu. During the engagement, the Liberian delegation expressed appreciation to the Bank of Ghana for its support and collaboration under the MoU. The delegation also expressed keen interest in learning from Ghana's experience in developing and strengthening its payment systems infrastructure.
A key focus of the discussions was Ghana's successful establishment of the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS). The Central Bank of Liberia is seeking to draw insights from the processes, institutional arrangements, implementation experiences, and lessons learned in the development of GhIPSS as it works to strengthen Liberia's own payment systems framework.
In her remarks, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu reaffirmed the Bank of Ghana's commitment to supporting the Central Bank of Liberia through sustained collaboration, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing. She emphasised the importance of peer learning, regional cooperation, and capacity building in fostering resilient, innovative, and efficient financial systems across Africa.
The visit underscores the strong partnership between the two institutions and reflects shared commitment to advancing financial sector development and strengthening payment systems in the West African sub-region. This partnership is expected to have a positive impact on the economic development of both countries.
The working visit by the Liberian delegation demonstrates the growing cooperation between Ghana and Liberia in the financial sector. The Bank of Ghana's willingness to share its expertise and experience with the Central Bank of Liberia is expected to contribute to the growth and stability of the financial sector in the region.
