The Government of Ghana has introduced a contra flow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors leading into Accra's Central Business District (CBD). This initiative aims to improve the reliability and punctuality of Ayalolo BRT services. The contra flow system will operate during peak hours, from 6am to 9am in the morning and 4pm to 8pm in the evening.
The corridors identified for the initial implementation are Amasaman–Accra Corridor, Adenta–Accra Corridor, and Kasoa–Accra Corridor. These corridors have been selected due to the significant volumes of commuters traveling to and from the CBD during peak periods. The arrangement will allow authorized Ayalolo BRT buses to travel in the priority direction against the normal flow of general traffic.
Under the contra flow system, selected sections of the corridors will be temporarily configured to accommodate Ayalolo BRT buses. The designated contra flow lanes will be strictly reserved for Ayalolo BRT operations. This intervention is intended to reduce journey times for commuters and ease congestion on major approaches to the CBD.
The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), will implement the contra flow arrangement. The arrangement is expected to encourage greater use of mass public transportation and reduce pressure created by large volumes of private vehicles.
The contra flow arrangement will take effect from Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The Ministry has assured that the arrangement will be implemented on designated sections of the corridors, subject to approved traffic management and road safety requirements. This initiative aims to improve overall urban mobility within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
