The Gombe State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to securing lives and properties in the state. Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Usman Chuso, made this assurance during the Command's 2026 Customer Service Week Celebration. The event, themed "Going the extra mile," brought together the police, communities, and stakeholders to improve security, prevent crime, and build public confidence in policing.
The Customer Service Week is designed to provide a platform for the police to engage directly with the public, receive constructive criticism, and identify areas for improvement in service delivery. Chuso emphasized that as a public service institution, the police must continually strive to provide prompt, professional, transparent, and efficient policing services. He noted that effective policing depends largely on the confidence, cooperation, and support of the communities.
The CP urged participants, including government officials, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, business owners, students, youth groups, transport unions, and journalists, to freely express their concerns and make recommendations on the command's operations. He assured that suggestions on crime prevention, public safety, police-community relations, and other areas requiring improvement would be carefully considered and incorporated into the command's strategies where necessary.
Gombe State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Adamu Dishi Kupto, described the engagement as timely, particularly with the country entering the 2027 electioneering period. He commended the police command for organizing the event and prayed for continued peace and security in the state and Nigeria as a whole. The District Head of Jalo-Waziri, Alhaji Sammani Bappah, commended the police for maintaining peace in the state but expressed concern over the shortage of police personnel.
Alhaji Sammani Bappah suggested the establishment of a police reserve system where recently retired officers could be retrained and recalled to assist in security emergencies. He emphasized that such a system would help address manpower shortages in the police force and called for stronger cooperation between traditional institutions and security agencies. The traditional ruler also stressed the importance of respecting and obeying the law, even when police officers are not around.
Other participants, particularly youth representatives, civil society organizations, and business communities, voiced their concerns and offered suggestions on the way forward. The engagement provided a platform for stakeholders to contribute to enhancing security and improving police-community relations in the state. The police command's efforts to engage with the public and address their concerns reflect its commitment to building trust and cooperation.
The Gombe State Police Command's initiative to engage with communities and stakeholders is a step towards strengthening security and improving public confidence in policing. The command's assurance to go the extra mile in securing lives and properties is a welcome development, especially as the country prepares for the 2027 elections. The police command's efforts to address manpower shortages and improve police-community relations will be crucial in maintaining peace and security in the state.
