The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has denied allegations of tension between the institution and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) following the resignation of BoG Governor Dr. Johnson Asiamah from the GoldBod Board. According to GoldBod, Dr. Asiamah nominated his deputy, Matilda Asante-Asiedu, to represent him due to his busy schedule. This move was made in accordance with Section 4(e) of the GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140).
GoldBod stated that a wrong impression was being created that the Governor's decision to leave the Board suggested a disagreement between the two institutions or problems within GoldBod. The institution described this suggestion as completely false and reflecting a lack of understanding of the GoldBod ACT and the facts of the matter. GoldBod emphasized that it continues to work closely with the BoG on foreign exchange generation.
The Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod is Sammy Gyamfi, Esq., while Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama is the Governor of the Bank of Ghana. GoldBod explained that similar arrangements had been made by other government officials serving on the Board. For instance, the finance minister nominated Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem to represent him on the Board due to his busy schedule.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, initially served on the Board himself but later nominated the Chief Director of the Ministry, Marcus Haligah, to represent him in January 2026 due to his schedule. GoldBod said Dr. Asiamah initially chose to serve on the Board himself but wrote to the Board on May 11, 2026, nominating Matilda Asante-Asiedu as his representative.
GoldBod said it remains closely engaged with the Bank of Ghana in its operations, describing the institution as the main anchor of foreign exchange generation for Ghana. The institution emphasized that the Governor's decision to nominate his deputy did not indicate any ongoing problems at GoldBod or a fight between the BoG and GoldBod.
According to GoldBod, the nomination of Matilda Asante-Asiedu as Dr. Asiamah's representative was a normal arrangement and not a reflection of any tension between the two institutions. GoldBod's Media Relations Officer, Prince Kwame Minkah, signed the statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding Dr. Asiamah's resignation from the Board.
GoldBod's clarification aims to dispel rumors and misinformation about the relationship between GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana. The institution remains committed to working with the BoG to achieve its goals in foreign exchange generation and other areas of cooperation.
