Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has invested nearly GH¢6 million to replace weak and perforated sections of its transmission lines between Kpong and Tema. This move aims to improve water supply to communities in the Greater Accra Region. The investment was made to address significant challenges along the transmission network that were affecting the volume of water reaching the Tema booster station.

According to Communications Manager of GWL, Stanley Martey, the company identified that 40 to 50 per cent of water pumped from Kpong was being lost before reaching the Tema booster station. This discovery prompted GWL to take steps to address the issue. The replacement of weak and perforated lines has resulted in more water reaching the Tema system. However, the company is still dealing with low pressure in parts of the network.

The repairs have enabled GWL to increase the volume of water reaching the Tema booster station. Despite this progress, the company is working to troubleshoot and identify the challenges causing low pressure. GWL has intensified its monitoring of the network to identify remaining faults and improve pressure. The company has personnel on the ground monitoring the network daily and reporting to management.

GWL is using Doppler measurements to track the movement and volume of water at different points along the transmission lines. This approach will help the company narrow down areas where water is being lost or where other faults are affecting supply. By measuring water volumes at different points, GWL aims to identify areas where challenges exist.

The gap between water demand and available supply remains a major problem, according to Mr Martey. He appealed to consumers to recognise that the current situation would require more efficient distribution of the available water. GWL is working to ensure that communities receive water at least once or twice a week, depending on their location and the availability of supply.

Mr Martey disclosed that GWL is working to distribute water equitably, given the demand and supply challenges. The company aims to provide water to communities a minimum of two times a week. GWL continues to work to address the technical challenges affecting water supply in the Greater Accra Region.

The investment of GH¢6 million is part of GWL's efforts to improve water supply in the region. The company remains committed to providing reliable and efficient water supply services to communities in Ghana. Key initiatives are being implemented to address the challenges facing the water sector.
