The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana has announced that its national officers' election will take place on Saturday, October 3. A total of 47 aspirants have been cleared to contest for nine categories of national officer positions. These positions include National Chairman, National Vice-Chairperson, General Secretary, National Treasurer, National Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Nasara (Zongo) Organiser, and National Communications Director.
According to the Chairman of the National Officers’ Elections Committee, Frederick Opare-Ansah, all 47 aspirants who appeared before the committee satisfied the requirements to contest the elections. The National Vice-Chairperson race has the highest number of aspirants, with 13 candidates cleared. The National Organiser position has eight candidates, while six aspirants were cleared for the National Youth Organiser position.
Other positions and their respective number of aspirants include: National Nasara Organiser with five qualified candidates, and National Chairman, General Secretary, and National Treasurer with four aspirants each. Two candidates were cleared for the National Women’s Organiser position, while only one aspirant was cleared for the National Communications Director position.
The NPP has been undertaking several reforms to position itself strongly against its main opponent, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and to recapture power. Among these reforms is the abolition of the electoral college in favour of a broader base of delegates. The party has also added 19 new delegate categories and granted amnesty to suspended members.
The NPP's decision to grant amnesty to suspended members was taken by the National Council during an emergency meeting held on July 25, 2025. The party announced that suspended members have been reinstated, and all charges against those facing the disciplinary committee have been dropped. This move is aimed at fostering internal cohesion and strengthening solidarity within the party.
In a statement dated August 16, 2025, the Acting National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, informed members that the National Council had resolved to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate disciplinary bodies.
Meanwhile, flagbearer aspirant for the NPP, Kennedy Agyapong, has picked the first spot on the party’s just-concluded ballot. The exercise, conducted on October 10, 2025, was to determine who takes which number on the ballot paper ahead of the presidential election on January 31, 2026.
