A recent Africa Policy Lens survey shows that more than a third of delegates are still undecided on who to vote for in the NPP chairmanship race. The survey, which covered 1,627 delegates eligible to vote, found that 615 delegates, or 37.8%, fall into the 'Don't Know' category. This bloc is larger than the support recorded for front-runner John Boadu or his closest rival, Boakye Agyarko.
Among delegates who did name a preference, John Boadu came out on top, polling 479 respondents, or 29.4% of the full eligible base. Boakye Agyarko trailed closely behind with 395 respondents, representing 24.3% of the eligible base. This gives Boadu an 8.3 percentage-point lead among decided voters. The survey also found that support for Boadu varied sharply by region, ranging from 56.2% in Oti Region to as low as 11.6% in Volta.
The survey, which is part of APL's Phase III Final Report on Delegates' Preferences, describes the outreach as a census-style survey rather than a random sample. The report measures stated perceptions rather than an election forecast. APL noted that regional figures should be read alongside the size of each region's delegate base.
While the chairmanship remains in flux, APL's data suggests other national executive contests are far more consolidated. In the General Secretary race, Justin Kodua Frimpong leads with 64.9% of the eligible base. For National Organiser, Daniel Nii Titus Glover commands 49.9% of the eligible base, well ahead of Ali Maiga Halidu's 16.0%.
The Treasurer race is APL's most open contest after the chairmanship, with 'Don't Know' responses leading at 39.6%. Among those who did pick a candidate, Alfred Kojo Thompson leads with 27.1% of the eligible base. In the Women Organiser race, Mavis Hawa Koomson leads with 49.5% eligible support against Safia Mohammed's 11.2%.
For the multi-select Vice Chairperson positions, Nana Akomea, Henry Nana Boakye, Mustapha Abdul Hameed, and Kojo Fosu Boadu topped the list of those chosen by delegates. The party has also conducted rehearsals with police and the Electoral Commission at Baba Yara Stadium ahead of the main polling day on Saturday.
With more than a third of surveyed delegates still undecided on the chairmanship, APL's report suggests the race could still shift before voting begins on Saturday. No further pre-election survey has been announced ahead of the October 3 vote.
